Plant-Based in a Small Town

· 1 min read

Outside a few city neighbourhoods, the plant-based option is often one item in an ordinary cafe. Finding it is a different search with different tactics.

Plant-Based in a Small Town

City advice does not transfer. In a town of nine thousand people there is no fully plant-based kitchen, there is no specialty roaster, and there may well be exactly one cafe with oat milk behind the counter. The search is not for the best option, it is for any workable one, and the tools that work in a city fail here because the directories are thin.

What works instead is the bakery, the greengrocer and the one place that opens early. Bakeries almost always have something without dairy, even if nobody has ever described it that way, and the person behind the counter knows the recipes. Greengrocers solve lunch. The early cafe will usually get oat milk in if you ask twice, because a standing customer is worth a carton.

Lower your search radius expectations

The other adjustment is time. In cities you filter by walking distance; in towns you filter by what is open, and the window can be narrow — closed Sundays, closed afternoons, closed the whole of August. Check the day before, not the morning of.

This site has the same thinness problem outside big cities, and there is no honest way to hide it: a list built from paid listings is dense where people are and empty where they are not. When a topic page here shows two entries for a region, that is the map telling you the truth about its own coverage rather than about the region.
