Reading a New Neighbourhood at Breakfast

· 1 min read

The first week in a new area is the cheapest time to work out where the good morning rooms are, because you have no habits to defend yet.

Reading a New Neighbourhood at Breakfast

When you move, the temptation is to find one acceptable cafe near the flat and stop looking. That decision gets made in the first ten days and then lasts for years, usually badly, because the first acceptable place is rarely the best one — it is just the closest one that was open when you were hungry.

A better week looks like this. Walk a different street each morning. Go early enough that the room is not yet full, because a full room hides everything: you cannot see the counter, you cannot hear whether the grinder runs continuously, and you cannot tell whether the staff know the regulars by name. Order the same thing everywhere for the first few days so you have something to compare.

What to write down

Three things are worth noting and nothing else: when it actually opens, whether the coffee is drinkable without sugar, and whether you could sit there for an hour without feeling watched. Everything else — the pastries, the playlist, the lighting — you will discover anyway if the first three hold.

By the end of the week you will have two or three places and a rough map of when each one is usable. That map is the thing that survives, and it is worth more than any single recommendation, including the ones on this site. What a ranked list does well is tell you what exists near a point on a map; what it cannot do is tell you which of them fits the way you actually eat in the morning.
